Maestra (Teacher!)
A documentary by Catherine Murphy
Join us for a film and discussion
April 4, 5pm
Portland Friends Meetinghouse
1837 Forest Ave Portland, Maine
This film explores the experiences of nine women who, as young girls, helped eradicate Cuban illiteracy within one year. Interweaving recent interviews, archival footage, and campaign photos, this lively
documentary includes one of the first
Cubans of her generation to call herself a feminist and one of the first openly proud members of Cuba’s
LGBT community. With wit and spirit, all recall negotiating for autonomy and independence in a culture still bound by patriarchal structures.
Learn about
• the brand-new US oil blockade that endangers lives and living in Cuba.
• Cuba’s pioneering effort at extending high-quality healthcare to all Cuban people and to people throughout the world.
• a cruel, illegal, and immoral US economic blockade of a neighboring country, ongoing for 65 years.
This film and discussion is also a fundraising event: Help Us Send Vital Medical Supplies To Cuba Now! The Trump administration is aiming a death blow at Cuba by depriving its people of fuel, food, and medicine. Global Health Partners is piercing this cruel blockade by rushing desperately needed medical equipment to Cuban hospitals, we need your help!
